​​AUGUST 2026-The July 2026 helicopter roundup has ended, but our work continues. Indigenous Wild Horse Society is now focused on securing suitable property and placement for the horses, with the goal of providing long-term care rooted in Indigenous stewardship

JULY 2, 2026: American Wild Horse Conservation is partnering with Indigenous Wild Horse Society to protect the Mono Lake & Montgomery Pass wild horse herds.

JULY 3, 2026: A federal lawsuit has been filed seeking an emergency restraining order as helicopter operations loom over unassessed ancestral lands.

 

We at Indigenous Wild Horse Society wish only to treat these magnificent horses with the dignity and respect that they deserve. They are our ancestors; we are their voices. 

A roundup in July is especially cruel because it is foaling season. Traumatized pregnant mares could miscarry. A foal's soft hooves are especially susceptible to damage. Heartbreakingly, an innocent foal's hoof could even detach from its body while running at full speed trying to keep up with a heard during a helicopter roundup. These babies could be crushed in a stampede or separated from their families.

 

We are deeply disturbed that the USFS knows this and yet they are breaking their own rules about not subjecting foals to such traumatic events especially in the summer heat. What's worse, is that the USFS scheduled this helicopter roundup despite more than 15,000 public comments over the years opposing it & most recently over an hour of public comments pleading for them not to use a helicopter.

 

Everyone is in agreement that the herd needs to be managed. Anyone whose been listening understands that Indigenous Wild Horse Society is willing to do that. Please join us in telling BLM and USFS to relinquish the management of these beautiful, intelligent and wonderful horses to the original stewards of this land. ​
